It’s no secret that game consoles have become more than just game machines. All of them are competing to become the king of the living room. Microsoft has usually been at the forefront of the home entertainment race. They began with the first video rental service on a console and the Xbox was the first console to get Netflix, which has been a smashing success. This has been followed up with and exclusive hold on ESPN and a Hulu app is all but confirmed. However, they want to take it further. Reports are coming in that Microsoft is in talks with major TV networks to bring content to Xbox.
While Microsoft already offers video content from many providers through the Zune Video channel, this network pursuit is presumably to bring live streaming network programming directly to the Xbox. This coincides with the announcement at the beginning of April that Microsoft would be adding Silverlight to the console. Silverlight would be more than capable of handling streaming feeds.
As a “cord-cutter” (my article about this coming soon), I am excited by this news and would gladly welcome it.
