Friends of Friends Coming to Xbox LIVE
Published November 26, 2007

Microsoft is making it even easier to expand your Friends network on Xbox LIVE®, starting with the Fall Dashboard Update on December 4. You'll be able to check out the friends lists of fellow Xbox LIVE members right from the Dashboard. With this new feature, members can find old friends or connect with new ones within the community of more than eight million people on Xbox LIVE around the globe and send messages and game invites, as well as compare games and Achievements.

With the prevalence of social media websites such as MySpace and FaceBook, this type of capability has largely come to be expected from consumers as a means to relate in an online community. Xbox LIVE continually seeks new ways to better serve the expectations of its members, which often result in free enhancements made available through the bi-annual Dashboard updates.

Friends List Settings
When the Fall Dashboard update is distributed on December 4, the new default setting on Xbox LIVE will be active, enabling members to see the Friends lists of other Xbox LIVE members. If you'd like to keep your friends list private, you can take the following steps to change your settings beginning today:

Log in to www.xbox.com/fof and select one of the three options available for your Gamertag:

Everyone (only available to members 18 and older)
Friends only (available to members 13 and older)
Blocked (available to all members, and automatic for anyone under the age of 13)
Stay tuned for more information about the Xbox 360 Dashboard Update later this month!

Everyone (only available to members 18 and older)

....Why?

So confirmed for the december update I will be able to pay for and download Xbox games that I already own, see my friend's friends that are either going to be my friends or I will not know them, and my parent can set how much time I can spend playing the 360 every day. HELL YEAH!

I'll be turning this off. I have too many Microsoft and Developer friends who don't want tag shares with the public.

That's what I need so I don't lose track of time playing Mass Effect.

That's what I need so I don't lose track of time playing Mass Effect.lol. Definitely. After looking at the list of other updates, I'm still pissed at the fact that they won't be fixing the Messenger Child Account issues!! I went onto the FoF page on Xbox to check my settings and it doesn't list Everyone as a restriction option. So I'm assuming it's related to the Messenger problem. :vb_cussing:

Anyone else notice the irony that Microsoft created the Friends of Friends feature yet don't want their gamertags to be seen by friends' friends.

Anyway, I too will be keeping my friend's list private. Not because I'm friends with the scientists on the Manhattan project or anything; I just would rather protect the privacy of my friends.

It's not like that. Most everyone in the industry related to XBL has a public tag they share and use for promo stuff and a private tag they use to just be themselves and game in peace.

That way their play sessions are not full of "Can I have a free game?!" and they can trash talk people without getting fired. lol

Touché.

But I still don't think very highly of this friends of friends idear.

I'm mostly pissed about it because it affects my Zune account as well. I can't download any explicit songs on my Zune account anymore (which caused me to cancel my subscription). This also applies to Podcasts marked explicit, such as the X-Play Podcast. Luckily I found a way around the Podcast one.
